Wisdom Wednesday: Becky W

For today's Wisdom Wednesday, we are featuring Achiever Becky! Over the past year, Becky has had some incredible accomplishments in the gym! After never really sticking to a long-term fitness routine in the past, Becky has really found her groove at Achieve! Read on to hear what she has been most excited about since starting a regular fitness routine, and what her advice would be if she could go back and chat with her former self!

Question 1: What has been the most exciting change for you since starting on a regular fitness routine?
BECKY:

In addition to getting physically stronger, I think the most exciting change for me has actually been the confidence that I've gained.  I have so much more confidence in myself than I did before starting at Achieve.  Something about lifting heavy things (consistently) and taking the time to take care of yourself, really changes how you feel about yourself.  I've noticed that I take more initiative and I'm more assertive both in the gym and in other domains of my life.  Making phone calls, talking to neighbors, writing an article for work — all of these things come more easily to me now, because I have so much more faith in myself.  Success at the gym has, for me, translated to success outside of it.

 

Question 2: If you could go back and give pre-Achieve Becky one piece of advice, what would it be?
BECKY:

I would tell myself to take it easier!  I used to go to the gym and do the hardest workout I could find online, thinking that I would only see changes if I pushed myself to my max.  What ended up happening was that I would work myself really hard, and after 2 weeks, I was so sore and exhausted (and sometimes injured!), I wouldn't want to return to the gym.  I would burn out and then I'd just give up. This pattern repeated itself on and off for years.  

Now I know that to achieve a goal, devoting a small amount of my effort consistently works better than trying to do everything all at once.  This is what you guys at Achieve have taught me!  I'm healthier, fitter, and much more balanced now.  Though my workouts are still tough, they don't destroy me.  I have tons of energy left over for the rest of the day, and I'm still making some amazing gains in strength.

Question 3: What is your favorite thing about working out?
BECKY:

The people.  Working out is a big commitment, and it's so much easier when you're around supportive people.  I didn't realize that having a community of people whom I liked seeing daily, and who encouraged me, made it so much easier for me to get my workouts done consistently.  I love the members and trainers at Achieve, and I've made a lot of new friends. Now, instead of thinking "Ugh, I should go and workout," I think to myself "I want to go see Sarah, Lauren, Jason, Ted... etc.  Oh, and I'll workout while I'm there."  More than anything, I think the community is what has helped me achieve my goals.
